The Hattie M. Strong scholarship is awarded to teacher interns who exhibit outstanding success and enthusiasm in field experience and/or life experiences, have demonstrated compelling financial need, and have maintained a 3.0 GPA as of the year prior to beginning internship.

Personal Statement: Attach a separate personal statement which reflects your commitment to teaching and addresses your record of contributions and accomplishments, particularly as they relate to the Department of Education’s Mission statement which is: The mission of the UMBC Teacher Education Unit is to research teaching and learning and to develop educators who are caring, thoughtful, knowledgeable, skilled, and responsive. We expect our graduates to respect diversity, to be leaders in their schools, and advocates for democracy and social justice.
  9. 9. Statement of Need: Please describe your current financial situation and specific need. Describe your sources of funding (grants, scholarships, loans, participation in special programs such as Sherman Scholars, reimbursement from your employer); the impact of your financial need on family, housing, and your continuation in the UMBC teacher preparation program; and other factors you wish the committee to consider. All details will remain confidential.
  10. 10. Students awarded the Strong Scholarship are required to submit a thank you letter at the end of the spring semester detailing their internship experience.
  11. 11. Recommendations: List two academic or professional references, at least one of whom is a UMBC faculty member.
