Open for Fall 2021 Incoming Freshmen ONLY

The Center for Women In Technology Scholars Program, also known as the CWIT Scholars Program, enables success for all women and other underrepresented groups in technology fields. In the College of Engineering & Information Technology, CWIT supports students with a nurturing and challenging community, transformative leadership experiences, and professional development opportunities.

CWIT invites all students to apply for an opportunity to become a scholar and receive:

  • Mentorship from faculty, students, and industry professionals who are members of the computing and engineering communities;
  • Professional development opportunities;
  • Priority acceptance to live in the CWIT Living Learning Community residential hall floor;
  • A CWIT Scholar four-year scholarship and more!

Please note that if you are selected as a finalist, then you will be invited to attend the virtual Scholar Selection Day on Saturday, February 27th. During this program you will participate in an interview and have a chance to meet other finalists. Please be sure to save this date in your calendar.

  1. List your intended major(s) at UMBC. Describe your short term and long term educational and career goals.
  2. Describe your past and current experiences and/or interests related: 1) to computing, engineering, or related areas and 2) leadership and/or meaningful involvement.
  3. The CWIT mission is to encourage the participation and leadership of women and other underrepresented groups in computing and engineering. Describe the ways your beliefs and experiences align with this mission. (Tell us your story!)
  4. Why are you interested in becoming a CWIT Scholar and in what specific ways could you contribute to the community? How did you hear about the CWIT Scholars Program?
  5. Your CWIT Scholars application will require two letters of recommendation addressing your suitability for this program. Applicants are able to use their general UMBC recommendation letters to apply for the CWIT Scholars Program, however preference will be given to applicants who submit two additional letters. These two additional letters should address your commitment to engineering, computing, or a related field and your interest in contributing to the CWIT mission. These two recommendations should be from a science or technology teacher and someone else familiar with your academic work and leadership qualities.
