Rodney C. Adkins Endowed Scholarship Fund

This award was established in honor of Rodney C. Adkins, currently Chairman of Avnet, Inc., a Fortune 500 company and one of the world’s largest distributors of electronic components and embedded solutions. Mr. Adkins was IBM’s first African-American Senior Vice President and corporate officer. In his more than thirty-three year career, Mr. Adkins has held a number of operational and executive management roles spanning across strategy, technology, systems and supply chain. Adkins has been awarded honorary doctoral degrees from Georgia Tech and UMBC. Mr. Adkins holds Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in electrical engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology, as well as, a Bachelor of Arts degree with an emphasis in physics from Rollins College. He is an advocate and inspiration for African-Americans in Engineering education and industry.

The purpose of this award shall be to:
1. Provide merit-based scholarship support to an undergraduate student(s) who is an active and participating member of UMBC’s chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE).
2. Highlight student(s) who have demonstrated commitment to increasing the representation of underrepresented students, including African Americans, in the engineering and information technology disciplines.

The UMBC NSBE chapter will award at least one scholarship for a UMBC student each academic year, pending available funds in the scholarship endowment account. Award amounts vary year to year.

● Be at least a second-year student currently enrolled at UMBC as a full-time student for the 2021-2022 school year.
● Minimum cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.00 or higher
● Have a major within the College of Engineering and Information Technology (COEIT) or Science, Technology, Engineering or Math
● Be a paid and active member of UMBC’s NSBE chapter
